Q & A: ADHD and Mental Health 17 Dec 2024

Join me for a weekly Q & A session. This week’s launch pad will be my new recently re-released videos:

   • Menopause and ADHD
   • Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and ADHD - ...
   • Sleep Apnea and ADHD

After a 1 minute recap of each video, I’ll be available for questions on these topics and others related to ADHD and the broader field of mental health.

(New) ADHD and Menopause:
We don’t yet have any studies of women with ADHD before, during and after menopause. But many women who had no previous executive function difficulties develop moderate to severe ADHD symptoms during menopause. Presumably estrogen receptors in the brain, which can elevate dopamine levels, and suppress glutamate, are involved.

Dopamine, Norepinephrine and ADHD - The Stories We Tell About Them:
Most of our ADHD drugs boost activity through dopamine and norepinephrine systems. Less than 1% of brain neurons use dopamine or norepinephrine as their primary neurotransmitter, but they have powerful effects modulating numerous networks in the brain. It’s almost certainly an oversimplification to claim that dopamine decreases the noise, and norepinephrine boosts the signal, helping making important environmental stimuli more salient.

Sleep Apnea and ADHD:
Obstructive sleep apnea, where airways close when muscles are relaxed during sleep, can cause severe sleep deprivation, and replicate all of the symptoms of ADHD. In some children and adults, correction of sleep apnea can reverse these symptoms.

I’m also experimenting with a Reddit page, where people can post comments or questions about my YouTube videos.
