ATIVAN (Lorazepam) – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interactions, Warnings
Lorazepam, marketed as Ativan, is a benzodiazepine primarily used for anxiety disorders, insomnia, seizures, preoperative sedation, and alcohol withdrawal symptoms. It works by enhancing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activity, inducing sedation, relaxation, and seizure prevention. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, and blurred vision, while serious effects like respiratory depression, hallucinations, and dependence may occur. Dosages vary based on the condition; for anxiety, 2–3 mg daily in divided doses is typical, while 2–4 mg at bedtime is used for insomnia. It interacts dangerously with alcohol, opioids, and sedative drugs, increasing risks like respiratory depression. Precautions include avoiding use during pregnancy, in elderly individuals prone to falls, and activities requiring alertness. Long-term use can cause dependence and withdrawal symptoms, necessitating careful management.
