Eiheiji Temple, located in Eiheiji-cho, Fukui Prefecture, is the head temple of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism, and is one of Japan's representative Zen temples, founded by Zen Master Dogen in 1244. Today, many monks still practice Zen meditation and other ascetic practices, and their rigorous daily life embodies the teachings of the Zen sect. There are more than 70 buildings on the temple grounds, which are characterized by a solemn atmosphere surrounded by nature in each of the four seasons. Zazen and sutra copying experiences are offered to tourists, conveying the spirit and culture of Zen to visitors. The temple is easily accessible from Fukui Station, making it a popular tourist destination.
