While the American ground forces fought a hard battle against determined defenders expanding the beachhead and clearing the southern part of the island, a historical event on sea overshadowed their efforts. On June 13th, the Japanese 1st Mobile Fleet headed towards the Marianas, aiming to engage the US invasion fleet in a decisive battle. What followed was the largest carrier-to-carrier battle in history.
