In this video exclusive from the first KidneyX Summit, Kevin Longino, CEO of the National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant recipient, highlights the necessity of keeping the patient in mind when creating new therapies and treatments for kidney disease.
“The patient cares about outcomes,” Longino told Healio/Nephrology. “The patient cares about being healthy. Oftentimes, the nephrologist or the clinician is mostly concerned about what the lab reports say, but the patient needs to be able to go to work. They only consider themselves cured if they can function in their lives.”
Longino considers phase 1 of Kidney X’s Redesign Dialysis competition a success due to the substantial amount of patient input and feedback. He hopes that phase 2 of the competition, Redefining Dialysis, will continue with added patient requirements for the inventors and investigators and more patient input for technical support and pricing.
With the patient at the center, “We’re going to be able to talk about things that matter to [them] and what they consider success to be.”
