Tsuruga Station is a JR West Japan and Happiline Fukui station located in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, and is a transportation hub served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line (opening in 2024), Hokuriku Main Line, and Obama Line. The station has two exits, “Machinami-guchi” (west exit) and “Yamanami-guchi” (east exit), with the east exit featuring a traffic plaza that was developed in conjunction with the opening of the Shinkansen. With convenient access to Tsuruga Port, the area has long flourished as a logistics and passenger hub and continues to be a key regional transportation and tourist destination.
Symbol Road is a street leading from the west exit to Kibi Jingu Shrine, and is approximately 450 meters long. It symbolizes Tsuruga as a “port and railroad town” and is lined with monuments and objets d'art.
There are also many historical attractions around the station, such as the “Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum” and the “Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse.” Tsuruga is especially known as a reception site for Jewish refugees on the “Visa for Life” issued by Chiune Sugihara during World War II. Surrounding the area are many places to enjoy nature and culture, such as Kanegasaki Green and Kibi Jingu Shrine.
