It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Takachiho Bus Station (Miyakoh Bus Center) to Takachiho Shrine.
The entrance ticket for Takachiho Night Kagura is 1,000 yen per person.
On the right side of the main hall of Takachiho Shrine, there is a 'Kagura Hall,' where the night kagura performance is held every evening at 8 PM. The performance features four of the most representative dances from the 33 kagura, including the 'Hand Strength Deity Dance,' 'Uzume Dance,' 'Door Opening Dance,' and the 'Sacred Object Dance.' The performance lasts for one hour and is also known as 'Takachiho Night Kagura,' making it a spectacle well worth witnessing. These dances reenact the story of Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess. It's said that Amaterasu hid herself in a cave in Amano Iwato in Takachiho out of anger at her brother Susanoo's mischief, plunging the world into darkness. Despite the other gods' attempts to coax her out, she refused. Eventually, the skilled dancer Ame-no-Uzume danced in front of the cave, causing the gods to laugh and gather around. Out of curiosity, Amaterasu peeked out, and was then pulled out by the strong god Ame-no-Tajikarao, restoring light to the world. Besides reenacting mythological stories, 'Takachiho Night Kagura' is also a ritual for praying for a bountiful harvest. It dates back to the Heian period, and from mid-November to early February each year, night kagura is performed in about 20 villages across the town. The dance continues from night until dawn, repeating all 33 kagura dances as a way of giving thanks for the autumn harvest and praying for a prosperous year ahead. This precious tradition, which has been passed down through the generations, has been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Japan.
Since the shrine is a sacred place, I didn’t capture much footage out of respect for the deities. However, there are still some meaningful and significant items within the shrine, such as the 'Chichibu Cedar,' the 'Chinishi Stone,' the 'Iron Guardian Dogs,' and the statue of 'Mikenu-no-Mikoto, the elder brother of Japan's first emperor, subduing the demon Oniyachi.'
