Do you play it safe all the time? Could it be that fear of failure is keeping you from stretching and growing? Socratica Friends, today we’re talking about the Growth Mindset and how it can set you free - free to fail, and free to learn from failure.
The term “Growth Mindset” was coined by Stanford researcher Carol Dweck and her colleagues. The parallel idea is the “Fixed Mindset.” People with a Fixed Mindset are reluctant to take chances and risk failure, because they believe that everyone has a fixed potential, and that once you reach your ceiling, it’s a waste of time to keep trying.
People with a Growth Mindset, on the other hand, are willing to sometimes look foolish and fail publicly. It’s worth it, you see, if you believe that people are capable of learning and growing through effort.
The research from Dweck and colleagues showed that the Fixed Mindset was less effective for learners. Not surprisingly, if you don’t believe you are capable of growing and learning, you are less likely to keep trying after a single failure. The Growth Mindset, on the other hand, sets you up for success.
It’s closely related to concepts of grit and perseverance - if you are willing to put up with some temporary discomfort caused by uncertainty and failure, the door remains open for you to move forward and continue to grow.
It’s important for educators to keep this in mind, as well - the best learning environments support the growth mindset in their students. Teachers should maintain high standards, and let their students know that they believe they are capable of continued growth and advancement. It also turns out to be better to praise effort and a strong work ethic, rather than telling students they are especially smart or intelligent. If you are praised for your hard work, you are more likely to keep working hard to improve!
