Title: Sustainable Development Approaches from Coastal B.C.

Jointly presented by: Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis First Nation and Island Coastal Economic Trust

In our presentation we will share Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis First Nation’s recent economic investments throughout their vast coastal territories and strengthening local wellbeing. We will share how Island Coastal Economic Trust works in service of Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis and all coastal communities across Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast as a community-led regional trust, and we’ll share communities’ vision to transform the trust under a new and leading model of regional economic co-governance.

Brodie Guy Bio

Brodie Guy has dedicated his career to Indigenous-led conservation and sustainable development in rural communities throughout British Columbia, Canada. He is currently the CEO of Island Coastal Economic Trust and has served in leadership roles with trusts and foundations where has facilitated the investment of more than $150 million into the start-up of numerous companies and entrepreneurial ventures, strategic business acquisitions by First Nations, the construction of major infrastructure and renewable energy projects, science and research initiatives, habitat restoration projects, and the start-up of the majority of Indigenous Guardian and stewardship programs now operating across B.C.’s coast. He and his partner are grateful that their three young children are growing up in the beautiful ancestral territories of the Pəntl'áč, E’ikᵂsɘn, and K’ómoks peoples (Comox Valley, Vancouver Island).

Jamie Pond, Kwiḵwa̱sut’inux̱w Haxwa’mis First Nation

Jamie has a mixed background including both First Nations and Irish heritage. Having lived on reserve for 12 years, she has developed perspectives from both indigenous and non-indigenous culture. Jamie believes her experiences have also enhanced her demonstrated ability to work successfully with First Nations in project management and program development. Jamie is with Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis First Nation working as their Capital Projects Manager.

Jamie is skilled in managing Government programs and projects, proposal writing, and supporting mentorship models in building local capacity. She has many years of experience working in contaminated soils projects, infrastructure, housing, climate adaptation, and clean energy projects. She is an administration professional graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Thompson Rivers University majoring in Management.
