In this video, I take you through the process of creating a traditional Japanese Yunomi cup on the potter’s wheel. Watch as I first throw the cup using 280g of dark stoneware clay, rich in grog, giving it a beautifully textured surface. I center the clay, open the form, and pull up the walls, gently altering the shape for an organic and natural feel.
In the second part, I trim the leather-hard cup the next day, refining the form and adding final touches. The finished Yunomi will be glazed with Shino and gas-fired in reduction to cone 10, bringing out its unique character. If you’re into pottery, especially Japanese-inspired ceramics, this step-by-step process is perfect for you!
