The "swing" rhythm seems to be everywhere. Whenever musicians want to spice things up or make it have a "jazz" sound, a swing feel is usually the first thing that gets thrown into the mix. We hear it in video games, commercials, movies, and even still in pop music today. But what exactly is "swing", and where did it come from? Why does "computer swing" sound so different from humans playing swing? Is "swing" just the space between notes? In this Sunday Jazz School, we explore an introduction into the world of swing, diving into its history and its progression through time to the present. By the end of this video, you should have a better idea of what "swing" is and how you can identify the different types that appear in jazz, and the rest of music!
