Karachi Biennale 2024 Set to Begin on October 27
The fourth edition of the Karachi Biennale (KB24), Pakistan’s largest contemporary art exhibition, will run from October 27 to November 10. This year's event will be particularly notable as Waheeda Baloch, a professor at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, becomes the first female curator to lead the Biennale.
Five Public Venues Hosting Diverse Art Forms
KB24 will be hosted at five public venues: Sambara Art Gallery, NED University (City Campus), Frere Hall, Bagh Ibne Qasim, and Alliance Française. Visitors can expect an immersive experience featuring a variety of installations, performances, pop-ups, and interactive sessions that engage with critical global and local issues.
Event Timings
The exhibition will be open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays through Sundays.
Exploring the Paradox of “Rizq” and “Risk”
This year’s Biennale will explore the tension between "Rizq" (sustenance) and "Risk" (threat), focusing on food security in the context of Pakistan’s ongoing climate and ecological challenges. Over 40 artists from 11 countries will present 18 projects that delve into these pressing issues.
Curatorial Vision: Environmental, Social, and Cultural Themes
Drawing from her experiences with recent floods, curator Waheeda Baloch will emphasize themes such as environmental degradation, food sovereignty, and social justice. In a statement on the Karachi Biennale’s website, Baloch described the theme “Rizq | Risk” as an effort to ignite conversations about the interconnections between food security, environmental sustainability, social justice, and cultural heritage.
Addressing Global and Local Food Systems
The exhibition will critically examine various factors that shape food systems, from colonial legacies and globalisation to climate change and carbon emissions. It will address issues like the loss of culinary heritage, land disputes, and neo-orientalist practices that threaten food security, while also celebrating food traditions, oral histories, and community-driven alternatives to current food systems.
Impact of Waterways and Natural Disasters
A key focus of the Biennale will be on the significance of waterways for agricultural livelihoods and the devastating effects of natural disasters on food production. Artists will act as advocates for sustainability, encouraging the public to reflect on how food systems relate to larger societal issues.
Engaging the Public in Climate and Social Justice Conversations
Through the artworks, the Biennale aims to raise awareness about climate resilience and social justice, using art as a catalyst for both reflection and action.
Workshops and Interactive Sessions
A detailed schedule of public programs, including workshops and interactive sessions, is available on the Karachi Biennale’s official website, inviting participants to engage more deeply with the event’s themes.
