Professor Molly Shoichet, Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto discusses a paper published in Nature Materials on August 29, 2011. In the paper Shoichet and her team of U of T researchers outline a new way of anchoring proteins in a 3D hydrogel. The team created 3D chemical pathways in the hydrogel using multi photon laser. The hope is that the process can be used to create chemical scaffolding for organs like retinas and larger body parts.
